These days, the nursing home can be an absolute last resort. The market for products that help us retain our independence for longer has exploded in recent years, with a wide range of devices and tools that make ‘getting old’ just that little bit easier.
The following products are particularly noteworthy – not only do they tackle some of the most common issues we face, but they’re also particularly effective and make a huge difference to daily life.
Walk-In Baths and Showers
We take it for granted that getting in and out of the shower and bath is part and parcel of daily life. However, once you start getting a little older, these things don’t come naturally anymore!
Home walk in showers make it much easier for someone who is struggling with movement. Not only that, they’re safer as well. You don’t have step over any obstacles, nor do you run the danger of slipping as you would with a regular model.
There are different types of walk in options – if you struggle with standing up for long periods, for example, there are models that have a built-in chair. If getting in and out is the only issue, a walk in bath will probably do the trick.
Stairlifts
Getting up and down a staircase can easily leave you out of breath and if you’re nursing any sort of long-term chronic injury, we’re often left languishing in the sitting room. Going upstairs becomes a last resort.
Stairlifts are often thought of as bulky and unsightly devices that don’t really work very well anyway – is it worth it? The thing is that stairlifts have actually made plenty of strides in the past 20 years or so. They’re far quieter, turn on and off quickly and easily, and get you up those stairs without a hitch.
Walking Aids
Every single doctor will tell you that exercise is a key component of keeping healthy and fit. However, for some people, walking is impeded to such an extent that something is needed to facilitate getting out and about.
If you enjoy walks in the countryside, strolls in the park, or just need something to help you get around, then walking aids will often be enough to make you feel a decade younger.
And we’re not just talking a wooden pole (or a more advanced version). These days, you can get modern motorised vehicles that will help you get out of the house and get a bit of fresh air.
And This Is Just the Beginning!
With the average population age increasing steadily, plenty of time and money has been allocated to ensuring that products are out there that can help us retain our independence for as long as possible.
In fact, these are just a few of the wide range of products that have been released for our elderly population in recent years. They’re really revolutionising independent living, often making the need for a nursing home no longer an issue.
